The German has even failed to make the squad at times, and at 26 years old, he must feel he still has plenty of years ahead in his career yet.
Kevin Grosskreutz believes Mario Gotze should eye a reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield
Mario Gotze has been warming the bench for the majority of Borussia Dortmund’s season
Gotze played for 62 minutes in a Champions League match against Club Bruges this week, which Dortmund scraped through thanks to a late winner. Grosskreutz believes it wasn’t just Gotze who under-performed.
‘I am very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him every day – and only about him,’ he told Sky Deutschland. ‘In Bruges, for example, the whole team didn’t play well.
‘Maybe it would be good to go abroad in the winter, where he has a bit more peace, and to bring his career back on track. Klopp knows him very well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.’
He did play in the Champions League, but didn’t make an impact in the 62 minutes he was on
Grosskruetz thinks Gotze will be able to kick start his career under Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool
However, Germany football legend Lothar Matthaus believes Gotze should be fighting for his spot at Borussia Dortmund.
‘Mario has to defend himself, he has to prove himself, he has to be a guy, that’s not enough for me, he has to assert himself in this shark tank with this team in Dortmund,’ he said.
‘Mario is dissatisfied with himself because he does not live up to his own expectations, it’s not always the coaches or the teammates who blame him, he has to start with himself.’
Dortmund are currently third in the Bundesliga standings with two wins and two draws from their four games so far. They have matches coming up against Nurnberg and Bayer Leverkusen in the league, as well as a visit from Monaco in the Champions League.
