Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was in attendance to watch young Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster score two goals on a sensational return from injury on Friday afternoon.

The pair formed a close friendship during their rehabilitation from major injuries over the last 12 months.

Brewster took another significant step in his recovery with a 45-minute appearance against Northwestern University at the Kirkby Academy, his first outing since January 2018.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is still working his way back to full fitness, watched on as the striker opened the scoring after six minutes with a curling effort from outside the penalty area.

He held off a challenge from a defender before rolling the ball onto his right foot and unleashing a sublime strike into the far corner.

The 18-year-old struck again just moments later by tucking home the rebound after Glen McAuley smashed an effort against the crossbar.

Brewster, who signed a long-term contract with the Reds last summer, played the entire first half of an eventual 4-0 win for Neil Critchley’s side.

Defender Tony Gallacher completed the scoring for the hosts with a brace from close range in the closing stages.

After leaving the field of play, Brewster walked over to Oxlade-Chamberlain and the pair were pictured embracing on the touchline.

He then tweeted the highlights of the game with the message: ‘Back on the pitch, back in the @LFC shirt, back in the goals!

‘Just want to say the Support over the last 15 or so months since i got injured, has been crazy so thank you to all the fans for your constant love and praise be to god always!’.

Oxlade-Chamberlain played for Liverpool’s Under-23s in a game at Derby earlier this month but was forced to come off after 41 minutes, having felt an issue in his hamstring. He was subsequently scanned and no significant problems came to light.

Jurgen Klopp has promised to take a vow of silence over his fitness from now on after he revealed in December that he was ahead of schedule in his recovery.

At this stage, it seems unlikely that Oxlade-Chamberlain will be in Liverpool’s matchday squad in the immediate future.

‘How can I say this? I think one of the biggest mistakes I made was being so excited about having Ox back,’ said Klopp. ‘Not because it’s not exciting, but because then the spotlight was on the U23 game at Derby, which is pretty rare.

‘I’m pretty sure Ox felt a little bit after the last session with us, and then he played the game and felt a little bit more, and everybody was looking at him.

‘So now we keep him a little bit more in the shadow, he’s in a pretty good moment, he will train, and when he is back and ready to be properly involved again, then I will inform you. Until then I will not speak about him.’
